Stop Negotiating With the King
“If you love me, you will keep my commands.” - John 14:15, CSB
There comes a moment when reflection has to become response.
You can recognize that your priorities are out of order. You can feel convicted about the areas you have withheld from God. You can agree that Jesus deserves first place. You can even become emotional while thinking about what needs to change. Yet none of those things are the same as obedience.
Agreement is not obedience. Conviction is not repentance. Good intentions are not a surrendered life.
That matters because many of us have learned how to feel deeply without changing visibly. We hear the Word. Something presses against the heart. We know God is speaking into a specific habit, relationship, attitude, or decision. We feel uncomfortable for a few minutes. We promise ourselves that we will deal with it later.
Then life moves forward. The calendar remains the same. The spending remains the same. The habit remains protected. The conversation remains delayed. The compromise stays in place. The moment of conviction passes, and we slowly become comfortable again.
Jesus never called us to admire His commands. He called us to obey them.
Pause there.
Obedience does not earn His love. Jesus has already demonstrated His love at the cross. He gave Himself for us while we were still rebels building our own kingdoms. Through faith in Christ, we are forgiven, accepted, and brought into the family of God by grace. Our obedience flows from that grace.
Jesus says, “If you love me, you will keep my commands.” Love for Christ becomes visible. It enters the calendar. It changes the budget. It reaches into the phone. It shapes the relationship. It governs the decision. It brings hidden places into the light.
This does not mean every act of obedience feels easy. Some obedience will feel costly. Some steps will require courage. Some will expose how deeply we have depended on comfort, approval, security, or control. That is where surrender becomes real.
It is easy to say Jesus is King while speaking in general terms. It becomes harder when His authority reaches something specific. “Jesus is King over my schedule.” “Jesus is King over how I spend money.” “Jesus is King over what I watch.” “Jesus is King over how I speak about people.” “Jesus is King over this relationship.” “Jesus is King over this opportunity.” “Jesus is King over the future I planned.”
The kingdom becomes visible through surrendered details.
And here is where this gets real. What has God already made clear? You may not need more information. You may not need another sign. You may not need another week to think about it. You may already know the next faithful step. The issue is whether you will take it.
Maybe you need to move something on the calendar because God has been receiving whatever energy remains. Maybe you need to change the budget because your spending reveals that comfort has become more important than generosity. Maybe you need to delete the app because it repeatedly feeds temptation, comparison, anger, or distraction. Maybe you need to end a hidden compromise that has slowly become normal. Maybe you need to schedule the conversation you keep avoiding. Maybe you need to apologize without explaining why the other person was also wrong. Maybe you need to bring someone trustworthy into the struggle because secrecy has allowed it to grow. Maybe you need to say yes to something God has placed before you. Maybe faithfulness means saying no.
Do not keep the response vague. Vague conviction rarely produces lasting change. “God, help me do better” can sound sincere while allowing us to avoid naming anything. Name the fear. Name the habit. Name the spending pattern. Name the relationship. Name the resentment. Name the decision. Bring the real thing before God.
Then ask for Spirit-given power. You cannot dethrone self-rule through more self-effort. The same heart that built the private kingdom cannot rescue itself from its own rule. You need the Holy Spirit. You need Him to expose what you have protected. You need Him to strengthen you when obedience feels costly. You need Him to redirect your desires. You need Him to remind you that the approval of Christ is more secure than the approval of people. You need Him to help you trust the Father when the outcome remains uncertain.
Dependence is not weakness. Dependence is the normal posture of someone living beneath the King.
Then make one visible adjustment. One. Not ten promises. Not an entire life plan created during an emotional moment. Take the next clear step. Make it concrete enough that you can point to it and say, “This is where I stopped negotiating.” Put the appointment on the calendar. Cancel the subscription. Change the password. Send the message. Create the boundary. Confess the compromise. Ask for accountability. Give the money. Refuse the opportunity. Open your home. Begin serving. Take the step God has made clear.
Then bring someone into it. Hypocrisy survives in secrecy. Authentic devotion welcomes the light. Find a mature believer who will pray with you, ask honest questions, and refuse to help you make excuses. Tell them what God exposed. Tell them what obedience requires. Ask them to follow up.
You were never meant to pursue Christ alone. God gives us the church so we can encourage one another, carry burdens, speak truth, and keep walking when surrender becomes difficult.
And remember why you can obey. Jesus did not demand surrender from a safe distance. He surrendered Himself. He sought the Father’s kingdom when obedience led through suffering. He carried the judgment for our divided allegiance. He died for every moment we called Him King while protecting our own rule. He rose again with all authority. The King calling you to surrender is the King who gave His life to make you His own.
So stop negotiating. Bring Him the calendar. Bring Him the money. Bring Him the habit. Bring Him the relationship. Bring Him the decision. Bring Him the hidden place.
One day, everything competing for first place will be gone. The money will be spent. The applause will fade. The plans will end. The comfort we protected will not go with us. The kingdom of God will remain.
Do not waste your life building a kingdom that cannot last while resisting the King who gave His life to save you. Seek Him first. When fear tells you to protect yourself, seek Him first. When comfort tells you to delay obedience, seek Him first. When approval tells you to compromise, seek Him first. When tomorrow feels uncertain, seek Him first.
Let the confession of your lips become the direction of your life. No more negotiating. No more leftovers. No more divided allegiance. Jesus is King. Let Him be first.
Reflection Question
What one visible adjustment will you make today to bring a specific area of your life beneath the authority of Jesus, and who will you ask to hold you accountable?
“Your priorities are revealed by what you are willing to surrender.”
Prayer
Father, I confess that I have often agreed with Your Word while delaying obedience. Forgive me for negotiating, making excuses, and protecting areas that belong beneath the rule of Jesus. Thank You for the King who gave Himself for me, carried my guilt, and rose to make me His own. Show me the next clear step. Give me Spirit-given power to take it. Bring my hidden life into the light, reorder my priorities, and let the confession of my lips become the direction of my life. Jesus, You are King. Teach me to seek You first in everything. In Your name, amen.
