Renewal Is Sustained by Who Rules Your Heart

“And let the peace of Christ, to which you were also called in one body, rule your hearts.” - Colossians 3:15a (CSB)

By the time Paul reaches this command, he has already done something crucial. He has grounded renewal in identity, clarified that it is a process, addressed how the mind is reshaped, called for old patterns to be put off, and described the new character to be put on. Now he turns to what sustains all of it.

Who is ruling your heart?

Paul does not say to create peace or maintain peace. He says to let the peace of Christ rule. The word rule carries the idea of authority, decision-making, and final say. Renewal does not last when Christ is admired but not obeyed. It lasts when He is trusted as King.
Many of us rely on self-control to carry us further than it ever can. We grit our teeth. We manage symptoms. We white-knuckle change. And when we fail, we assume the problem is effort rather than authority. But self-control makes a terrible ruler. It exhausts us, condemns us, and eventually collapses under pressure.

Christ’s peace does something different.

When Christ rules, peace becomes the lens through which decisions are made. It interrupts panic. It slows reaction. It reminds us that obedience flows from security, not fear. This peace does not eliminate difficulty, but it anchors us when difficulty comes.
Renewal begins when Christ saves you. It grows as your mind is reshaped. It deepens as old patterns are released and new character is practiced. But it is sustained only when

Christ’s authority is welcomed daily.

This is not about perfection. It is about posture. When Christ rules, repentance becomes quicker. Humility becomes easier. Grace becomes the atmosphere you live in rather than the concept you visit.

A renewed life is not one where struggles disappear. It is one where Christ consistently has the final word.

Reflection Question
What currently has the loudest voice in your heart when decisions or emotions rise?

Renewal lasts when Christ has the final say.

Prayer
Jesus, I confess that I often rely on my own strength to sustain change. Teach me to let Your peace rule my heart. Where fear, control, or pressure has taken authority, reclaim that space. Help me live from Your rule, trusting that You are faithful to sustain the work You have begun in me. Amen.
