Live Like the King Is Coming

“Our citizenship is in heaven, and we eagerly wait for a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ. He will transform the body of our humble condition into the likeness of his glorious body, by the power that enables him to subject everything to himself.” - Philippians 3:20–21

Jesus is coming back. We say that. We believe that. But there is a difference between believing something doctrinally and allowing that truth to shape the way you live today.
Paul says that our citizenship is in heaven, and then immediately tells us that we are "eagerly waiting" for a Savior from there. That waiting is not passive. Paul is describing expectation. Longing. A life lived with your eyes fixed on the returning King.

And that changes things.

Because if Jesus is really coming, then this life cannot be all there is.

Your current circumstances are not the final chapter. Your suffering does not get the final word. Your weakness does not get the final word. Your grief does not get the final word. Your aging body does not get the final word. Your failures do not get the final word.
Jesus does.

Paul says Christ "will transform the body of our humble condition into the likeness of his glorious body." There is a future coming when Christ will make right what is broken.
That means Christian hope is bigger than escaping somewhere after death. We are waiting for the King. We are looking toward resurrection. We are looking toward restoration. We are looking toward the day when Jesus reigns without rival and everything broken by rebellion is finally placed under His rule.

That future changes how we live now.

Because when we forget that Jesus is coming, temporary things begin feeling permanent. Comfort starts feeling necessary. Success starts feeling ultimate. Suffering starts feeling meaningless. Approval starts feeling essential. Compromise starts feeling reasonable.

We begin building our lives around things that cannot survive the return of the King.

And if we're honest, we do this easily. We spend enormous amounts of energy protecting things that are temporary. Our image. Our position. Our plans. Our money. Our comfort. Our reputation. Our ability to control what happens next.

Then Paul lifts our eyes and says, in effect, remember where all of this is going. The King is coming.

And if the King is coming, then faithful obedience today is never wasted.

Every act of obedience matters. Every unseen act of faithfulness matters. Every time you forgive when bitterness would feel easier, it matters. Every time you tell the truth when dishonesty could benefit you, it matters. Every time you serve without recognition, it matters. Every time you resist compromise, it matters. Every time you choose generosity over greed, it matters. Every time you remain faithful through suffering, it matters. Every time you obey Christ when nobody applauds, it matters.

Why? Because you are living for a kingdom that will remain when every temporary kingdom is gone.

That's the point. Future hope produces present faithfulness.

Heavenly citizenship cannot remain something you admire. It needs to become visible.
So take some time today and examine four areas of your life.

Choices. Look at the decisions you have made recently. Not the decisions you wish you had made. What authority has actually been making your choices? When Scripture and your desires disagreed, which one won?

Attitudes. What repeatedly brings fear, pride, anger, contempt, envy, or bitterness out of you? Pay attention to your reactions. They often reveal where something earthly has gained too much influence.

Ambitions. What achievement are you quietly believing would finally prove your worth? What are you chasing that you believe will finally make you feel secure, respected, successful, or important?

Relationships. Whose approval carries enough weight that you might compromise obedience to keep it? Who has the power to change what you believe, say, or do because you're afraid of losing them?

Don't write what you intend to believe. Look at what your recent behavior has revealed.
Then name the competing allegiance. Complete this sentence: "In this area, I claim Christ as King, but I have been living according to the value of __________."

Maybe it is approval. Comfort. Control. Security. Success. Recognition. Fear. Pride.
Name it. You cannot surrender what you refuse to identify.

Then pray specifically. Ask for Spirit-given power. Not vague strength. Not generic help. Ask the Holy Spirit to remind you who you are in Christ, expose the allegiance competing with Jesus, and give you power to obey your King.

Then act. Make one measurable adjustment.

If you acted wrongly, apologize. If something has been feeding compromise, remove it. If you have been dishonest, tell the truth. If bitterness has been controlling you, begin the work of forgiveness. If someone's approval has been ruling you, choose obedience even if they disagree. If you have been neglecting something Christ has clearly called you to do, take the first step.

Make your response concrete enough that you can look back and say, "This is where my heavenly citizenship became visible."

And then bring another believer into it. Tell someone mature in the faith what God has exposed. Tell them what step you are taking. Ask them to check on you. Because citizenship is personal, but it isn't private. We need one another.

Remember, someone is watching your response. Your repentance may become the example someone else needs. Your obedience may give someone else courage. Your faithfulness may teach your children what following Jesus looks like. Your willingness to surrender may show another believer that change is possible through the power of the Spirit.

So don't finish this devotional series with another piece of Christian information. Respond.
You belong to another kingdom. You serve another King. Your Savior is coming. So live today in a way that makes that future visible.

Speak as someone who represents the King. Love as someone who has been loved by the King. Forgive as someone who has been forgiven by the King. Obey as someone who trusts the King. Stand firm because your King is returning.

Let your home, your work, your relationships, your decisions, and your hidden life tell the truth about where you belong.

You are not trying to earn citizenship. Christ has already made you His. Now live like you belong to Him.

Reflection Question
What is one specific area where your heavenly citizenship needs to become visible through obedience this week?
Write down:

• The competing allegiance God has exposed.
• The specific action you will take.
• The mature believer you will ask to hold you accountable.
• Then act on it before the week ends.

Future hope produces present faithfulness. Live today like your King is coming.

Prayer
Father, thank You that my future is held by Christ. Thank You that suffering, failure, weakness, grief, and death do not have the final word. Jesus does. Forgive me for building my life around temporary things and giving earthly values more authority than they deserve.
Holy Spirit, expose every competing allegiance in me. Give me Spirit-given power to obey my King. Give me courage to take the step I already know I need to take. Make my citizenship visible in my choices, attitudes, ambitions, relationships, words, finances, work, home, and hidden life. Keep my eyes fixed on the returning King. Until Jesus comes, let heaven shape how I live on earth. Jesus, You are Lord. Teach me to live like I belong to You.
