Dig Beneath the Surface
"He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock." - Luke 6:48a (CSB)
Jesus gives us a picture of obedience that feels incredibly ordinary. A man building a house. No dramatic miracle. No crowd. No thunder from heaven. A builder with dirt under his fingernails, digging.
And Jesus makes sure we notice something about him. He "dug deep."
Pause there.
That detail matters. Because foundations require work that nobody sees. When someone looks at a finished house, they notice the walls. The flooring. The kitchen. The paint. The furniture. Nobody walks through a house saying, "Wow, look at that foundation." Most of the important work happened underground. It was hidden. And yet everything visible depends on what nobody can see.
Jesus says that is what a life of obedience looks like. The wise builder keeps digging until he reaches something solid enough to carry the weight of everything above it. And here's where this gets personal.
Every life is built on something. Every one. There is something underneath your decisions. Something underneath the way you respond when people disappoint you. Something underneath the way you use money. Something underneath what you are willing to sacrifice. Something underneath the relationships you pursue. Something underneath the things you refuse to surrender.
We rarely notice those foundations when life is easy. We see them when obedience gets expensive.
You may tell yourself that Jesus is the foundation of your life. Then His Word conflicts with what you want. Now we find out what is really underneath.
Digging means refusing to stop at the surface answer. You ask, "Why am I struggling to obey here?" The first answer might be, "I'm nervous." Dig deeper. Why are you nervous? "Because I don't know how they will respond." Dig deeper. Why does their response carry so much weight? "Because I need their approval." Now we are getting somewhere.
Or maybe you say, "I'm waiting for the right time." Dig deeper. What would make a time feel right? "When obedience does not cost me as much." There it is.
Sometimes our biggest spiritual problems are buried underneath respectable explanations.
That is why surface level Christianity is so dangerous. You can have a lot of Christian things in your life without Christ carrying the weight of your life.
Church attendance. Bible reading. Prayer. Christian music. Serving. Those things matter deeply. But Jesus is not talking about decorating a house with spiritual things. He is talking about what the entire house rests on.
And if we're honest, many of us would love for Jesus to fit into the structure we already designed. We have our plans. Our career. Our relationships. Our schedule. Our priorities. Our comfort. Then we try to find a place where Jesus fits. Maybe He gets Sunday morning. Maybe He gets a prayer before meals. Maybe He gets a devotional in the morning. Then we ask Him to bless the structure.
Jesus is laying claim to something deeper. He is saying, "Build all of it on Me."
That means obedience keeps digging beneath the question, "What do I want?" It digs beneath, "What will people think?" It digs beneath, "What feels easiest?" It digs beneath, "What will this cost me?" Eventually it reaches one question: "What did Jesus say?" That is foundation language.
And this matters because Jesus is worthy of that kind of trust. His authority is good. His wisdom is trustworthy. His commands are not given to ruin you. His grace is sufficient for whatever obedience requires.
When you dig beneath comfort and control, you are not digging toward chaos. You are digging toward Christ. You are digging toward something solid. Something that can carry weight. Something that does not move every time your feelings change. Something that does not collapse when someone disapproves of you. Something that does not disappear when life becomes painful.
That is the invitation today.
Dig. Ask the harder question. What is actually underneath the area where you struggle to obey? Do not settle for the answer that sounds spiritual. Do not settle for the explanation that protects your pride. Ask God to show you what is really competing for authority.
Because authentic devotion keeps digging until nothing underneath your life has more authority than Jesus.
Maybe today God is showing you that approval has been carrying too much weight. Maybe it is comfort. Maybe fear. Maybe control. Maybe there is something else. Name it. Bring it into the light.
Then remind yourself who Christ is. Your King is not calling you onto unstable ground. He is the Rock. And whatever needs to move so your life can rest more fully on Him is worth moving.

What area of your life feels hardest to bring under the authority of Jesus right now?
Then ask yourself: What is underneath that resistance? Fear, comfort, approval, control, or something else?

Prayer
Father, help me dig beneath the surface. Show me what is really underneath the places where I struggle to obey You. Expose the fear, comfort, approval, control, or pride that I may have allowed to carry more weight than Your Word. I do not want to build my life on something that shifts with circumstances. Teach me to trust the authority of Jesus. Remind me that His wisdom is good, His commands are trustworthy, and His grace is enough for whatever obedience costs. Holy Spirit, give me courage to surrender what needs to move.
Dig beneath everything in me that competes with Christ until He is underneath everything.
Build my life on the Rock. In Jesus' name, amen.
