Take Worship With You
“And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” - Colossians 3:17 CSB
This week started with a question: What happens when worship leaves the room?
Now we have reached the place where that question has to become personal. Because eventually the song ends. The sermon ends. The devotional ends. Sunday ends. And Monday comes. The alarm goes off. There is work to do. Kids need something. Traffic starts moving. Emails begin arriving. Bills still need to be paid. Someone will probably irritate you. Plans will change. Life will feel incredibly ordinary.
And that is where worship continues. Paul says, "Whatever you do…" Not only when you are singing. Not only when you are praying. Not only when you are sitting in church. Whatever you do. "In word or in deed…" What you say. What you do. "Do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus." Everything.
That is where this whole week has been leading. Worship becomes a lifestyle when the worth of Jesus begins governing the ordinary parts of your life. So now the question becomes: What will you do with that?
Because there is a point where reflection has to become response. Maybe God has exposed something this week. Maybe you realized the Word of Christ has been visiting your life without truly governing it. Maybe pressure revealed what has really been filling your heart. Maybe there is an area you cannot honestly place the name of Jesus over. Maybe you realized you have been trying to change yourself through effort instead of living from the grace Christ has already given you. Whatever God has shown you, do not leave it sitting on the page. Respond.
Pick one ordinary area of your life. Your marriage. Your parenting. Your work. Your school. Your money. Your phone. Your entertainment. Your conversations. Your attitude. Your schedule. Choose one. Then ask: "Jesus, if Your name is over this part of my life, what does faithfulness look like here?" And stay there long enough to answer honestly.
Maybe faithfulness means apologizing. Maybe it means deleting something. Maybe it means putting the phone away and becoming present again. Maybe it means changing the way you speak to someone. Maybe it means doing excellent work when nobody is watching. Maybe it means keeping a promise you have been avoiding. Maybe it means serving without needing anybody to notice. Maybe it means forgiving. Maybe it means admitting that something has been controlling you.
Sometimes obedience feels dramatic. Most of the time, it does not. Sometimes worship looks like washing dishes with gratitude. Sometimes it looks like answering gently when you are irritated. Sometimes it looks like getting up and going to work with integrity. Sometimes it looks like sitting with somebody who needs you. Sometimes it looks like telling the truth when dishonesty would be easier. These moments matter because Jesus is Lord there too.
And Paul keeps bringing us back to gratitude. So as you go through today, thank God in the middle of ordinary things. "Father, thank You for this family." "Thank You for this job." "Thank You for another day." "Thank You for the person sitting across from me." "Thank You for giving me an opportunity to serve." Gratitude turns our attention back toward the One who gave us everything we have.
And when you fail? Because you will. Go back to the gospel. Jesus has already done what you could never accomplish. Your acceptance before God does not rise and fall with your performance today. You belong to Christ because of His grace. So when you stumble, confess it. Receive His forgiveness. Ask for Spirit-given power. Then keep walking.
That is the life of worship. Not perfection. Surrender. A life continually being brought beneath the name of Jesus.
So when this devotional closes, worship does not. Take it with you. Into your home. Into your workplace. Into your conversations. Into your decisions. Into your private life. Into the painfully ordinary moments nobody else sees.
Let the Word of Christ move in. Let it shape the house. Let gratitude rise in your heart. Let the name of Jesus govern what you say, what you do, what you pursue, how you work, how you love, and how you live. In public. In private. In the extraordinary. In the ordinary. All of it.
Because worship was never meant to remain in the room. It was meant to become your life.
Reflection Question
What one ordinary part of your life will you intentionally place beneath the name of Jesus this week, and what specific act of obedience will that require from you?
Worship was never meant to remain in the room. It was meant to become your life.
Prayer
Father, thank You for giving me new life through Jesus. I do not want worship to be something I visit once a week. I want my life to belong fully to You. Show me where I need to obey. Give me Spirit-given power to follow through. Let Your Word shape me, let gratitude fill me, and let the name of Jesus govern the ordinary parts of my day. Take my words, choices, relationships, work, and every hidden part of my life and make them an offering of worship to You. Amen.
