Does the Description Sound Like You?
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for the kingdom of heaven is theirs.” - Matthew 5:3, CSB
We have spent six days looking at the kind of person Jesus describes as blessed. And now we need to ask the question that has been underneath this entire week: Does the description sound like you?
Not, "Do you agree with the Beatitudes?" Not, "Could you explain them?" Not, "Do you believe Christians should live this way?"
Look at your actual life. Are you becoming this kind of person?
Jesus described people who recognize their spiritual poverty. People who grieve rebellion instead of constantly defending themselves. People whose strength has come under God's authority. People who genuinely hunger for righteousness. People who show mercy. People whose public life and private life are moving in the same direction. People willing to pursue peace. People whose allegiance to Jesus remains when obedience becomes costly.
That is quite a portrait.
And after looking at it for an entire week, there are probably areas where you can see God working. Celebrate that.
Maybe you are more merciful than you used to be. Maybe an area of compromise that once controlled you has been brought into the light. Maybe you are learning to surrender control. Maybe you have started having conversations you once avoided. Maybe you are beginning to desire things you did not desire before.
That is evidence of grace. The Spirit of God is at work.
But there are probably other places where the description feels uncomfortable. Places where you recognize resistance.
Maybe you can talk about depending on God while still trying to control everything. Maybe you love receiving mercy while struggling to extend it. Maybe the public version of your faith looks healthy while there are private areas you have carefully protected. Maybe you call yourself a peacemaker, but what you really mean is that you avoid difficult conversations. Maybe you want righteousness until righteousness threatens something you enjoy. Maybe obedience feels important until obedience costs approval.
Do not run from what God exposes.
Remember what we saw yesterday. Your hope is not your ability to perfectly perform the Beatitudes. Your hope is Jesus. And because your hope is Jesus, you can bring your weakness into the light without pretending. You can confess. You can surrender. You can change. You can obey.
So today, I want to encourage you to do something very practical.
Take out your Bible and slowly read Matthew 5:3 through 12. Do not race through it because you have heard these verses before. Read each description slowly.
Poor in spirit. Pause. Where do you see dependence on God growing in your life? Where are you still relying on yourself?
Those who mourn. Pause. When God exposes rebellion in you, do you grieve it? Or do you immediately explain it?
The meek. Pause. What happens when you have enough power to get your own way? Is your strength surrendered to God?
Those who hunger and thirst for righteousness. Pause. What have you been craving lately? What desire has been shaping your decisions?
The merciful. Pause. Whose failure are you still holding over them?
The pure in heart. Pause. Does your private life agree with what your public life says you believe?
The peacemakers. Pause. Is there a broken relationship where pride has kept you from taking a biblical step toward peace?
Those persecuted because of righteousness. Pause. Is there an area where fear of what obedience may cost has caused you to soften your allegiance?
Now ask two questions beside each Beatitude: Where do I see the Spirit producing this in me? Where am I resisting what the Spirit wants to produce in me?
And be specific. Do not answer according to the person you want to be. Answer according to what your life has been revealing.
Your reactions reveal things. Your words reveal things. Your habits reveal things. Your spending reveals things. Your private choices reveal things. The way you respond when somebody confronts you reveals things. The things you fear losing reveal things.
Let God search those places.
Then choose one character gap. One. You do not need to walk away from this devotional trying to fix eight things by tonight.
Which area is the Holy Spirit pressing on most clearly? Name it.
Then pray specifically. "Holy Spirit, expose where I am resisting Your work. Produce the character of Jesus in me, and give me power to obey."
And then attach one visible act of obedience to that prayer.
If God exposes pride, apologize. If He exposes bitterness, begin the work of forgiveness. If He exposes hidden compromise, remove it and bring it into the light. If He exposes avoidance, initiate the conversation. If He exposes fear, take the faithful step you have been delaying. If He exposes disordered desire, stop feeding it.
Then tomorrow, return to Matthew 5:3 through 12 and read it again. Do that for seven days. Every day ask: "Jesus, where are You forming Your character in me today?"
Because the goal of this week was never to become people who know more information about the Beatitudes. Jesus is describing kingdom citizens. People who belong to a King and, by His Spirit, begin bearing the family resemblance of that King.
That is what authentic citizenship eventually produces. Dependence. Surrender. Righteous desire. Mercy. Purity. Peace. Faithfulness.
And none of that means you will reach a point where you no longer need grace. The deeper God forms the character of Jesus in you, the more clearly you often see how much you still need Him.
So keep coming with empty hands. Keep asking for Spirit given power. Keep surrendering what He exposes. Keep taking the next step of obedience.
You belong to a King who gave Himself for you. He saved you for Himself. To know Him. To reflect Him. To represent Him.
So as this devotional ends, do not settle for learning the language of the kingdom while resisting the character of the King. Let the way you live tell the truth about who you belong to.
Because the clearest evidence that the King rules your life is that, by His Spirit, you are increasingly becoming like Him.
Reflection Question
Which one of the eight Beatitudes most clearly exposes an area where the Holy Spirit is calling you to surrender and obey right now, and what visible step will you take today?
Let the way you live tell the truth about who you belong to.
Prayer
Father, thank You for showing me what life under Your rule looks like. Thank You that Jesus has done what I could never do for myself and that You have given Your Spirit to everyone who belongs to Him. Search me today. Show me where Your character is growing in me and where I am still resisting You. Holy Spirit, give me Spirit given power to obey what You reveal. Make me dependent. Reorder my desires. Make me merciful, pure in heart, and willing to pursue peace. Give me courage when obedience becomes costly. Form the character of Jesus in me so that the way I live increasingly tells the truth about the King I belong to. Amen.
