Salt of the Earth

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt should lose its taste, how can it be made salty? It’s no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.” - Matthew 5:13 (CSB)

“Act wisely toward outsiders, making the most of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you should answer each person.” - Colossians 4:5-6 (CSB)

Let me ask you something—when’s the last time you ate fries with no salt? It’s like chewing on cardboard. Salt changes things. It preserves. It enhances. It makes bland things flavorful. And in this broken world, you’re called to be that salt. Jesus says, “You are the salt of the earth,” which means your presence should make a difference.

But here’s the problem. Some of us have lost our saltiness. We’ve blended in so much with the culture around us that we’re practically indistinguishable. Instead of being countercultural, we’re just… cultural. We soften the edges of our faith to avoid being labeled “judgmental” or “outdated.” Or maybe we’ve gotten comfortable being quiet about truth because it’s easier than being misunderstood.

Listen, I get it. Standing out is uncomfortable. But salt that doesn’t flavor or preserve is useless. It’s just white dust. God didn’t redeem you so you could be tasteless. You are meant to season the world with grace and truth—to slow the moral decay around you and offer a glimpse of the goodness of God.

So, let’s get practical. Who are you seasoning today? Is your speech “full of grace, seasoned with salt”? Are you speaking truth with love? Are you pushing back darkness through kindness, generosity, and a refusal to compromise on holiness? Ask the Lord for an opportunity to be salt today. Maybe it’s through a gentle but honest conversation with a coworker. Maybe it’s by refusing to gossip when everyone else is.

The point is this: be distinct. Be different. Be salt.
