aith Anchors in God’s Character, Not Outcomes

“Though he slay me, I will hope in him.” -  Job 13:15a (CSB)

One of the quiet distortions of faith is the assumption that trust depends on outcomes.
We rarely say it out loud, but we live as if faith is validated when things improve. When prayers are answered the way we hoped. When doors open. When relief comes. When the future makes sense.

But Job dismantles that assumption with one sentence: “Though he slay me, I will hope in him.”

That is unsettling language.

Job is not saying God’s actions are easy to understand. He is saying God’s character remains trustworthy even when His actions are difficult to interpret. Job’s faith is not anchored in relief. It is anchored in God Himself.

This is where faith becomes real.

If your faith depends on outcomes, it will always remain fragile. It will rise when life improves and collapse when life becomes painful. But if your faith depends on God’s character, it becomes steady even in uncertainty.

Faith says, “I trust God, not because I understand everything, but because I know Him.”
This distinction protects you from disappointment turning into disillusionment. It keeps hardship from redefining your view of God. It allows you to endure seasons where clarity is absent but God remains present.

The cross proves this most clearly.

From a human perspective, the crucifixion looked like defeat. Confusion. Loss. But it was the greatest act of redemption in history. What appeared to contradict God’s goodness was actually the fullest expression of it.

That means your inability to see purpose does not mean purpose is absent.
Faith does not require immediate explanation. It requires settled confidence in the God who has already revealed His goodness in Christ.

You may not understand everything. But you can trust the One who does.

Reflection Question
Where has your trust in God become dependent on outcomes instead of anchored in His character?

Faith rests in who God is, not in what you can predict.

Prayer
Father, forgive me for tying my trust to outcomes I can see. Strengthen my confidence in Your character. Help me trust You when clarity is absent. Anchor my faith in the finished work of Christ, not in changing circumstances. Amen.
