Christ Doesn’t Visit, He Dwells

“…and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith.” - Ephesians 3:17a (CSB)

Most of us are comfortable with a version of Jesus who visits.
  • A Christ who shows up when life falls apart.
  • A Christ we call when we are anxious.
  • A Christ who offers comfort, encouragement, and a little spiritual help.
But Paul prays for something far deeper than a visit. He prays that Christ would dwell in your heart.

That word is weighty. Dwelling is not a drop-in. It is residence. It is ownership. It is permanence. Paul is not praying that Christ would occasionally appear in your life. He is praying that Christ would move into the center of it.

This exposes something in us.

We often want Jesus as an accessory, not an authority. We want His help without His lordship. We want comfort without surrender. We want Him close enough to rescue, but far enough to not disrupt what we want untouched. But Christianity is not Christ renting a room in the house of your heart. It is Christ taking the keys. And notice how this happens: through faith.
  • Not through cleaning yourself up.
  • Not through religious performance.
  • Not through proving worthiness.
Faith is the empty hand that receives Christ. Paul is reminding believers that the love of God is not floating in the air as vague affirmation. The love of God has an address. It is found in Jesus. God loves you because Christ dwells in you. That means God’s love is not based on how strong your grip is. It is based on the fact that Christ has moved in and will not leave.

So the question today is not whether Jesus has helped you. The question is whether He dwells. Not as a guest you manage, but as a Savior you trust. Not as a consultant you call, but as a Lord who resides.

This is where love begins: Christ in you.

Reflection Question
Where have you treated Jesus like a visitor instead of welcoming Him as a resident?

God’s love is not detached from Christ’s presence. Love has an address, and it is Jesus.

Prayer
Father, forgive me for wanting Christ close enough to comfort me but distant enough to avoid surrender. Teach me what it means for Jesus to truly dwell in the center of my life. Strengthen my faith to receive Him fully, and let Your love become the ground I stand on because Christ has moved in. Amen.
