The Kind of Friends You Need

“Do not be misled: ‘Bad company corrupts good character.’” – 1 Corinthians 15:33

Christian community isn’t about being surrounded by people who agree with you. It’s about walking with people who are committed to helping you look more like Jesus.

In today’s world, affirmation is often mistaken for love. But true love doesn’t leave you stuck. It calls you higher.

When Scripture warns us in 1 Corinthians 15:33 that “bad company corrupts good character,” it's not just talking about obvious rebellion. It’s addressing the subtle drift that happens when your closest voices care more about your comfort than your Christlikeness.
You need people in your life who will gently—but boldly—remind you of who you are in Christ when you forget. Friends who pray for your holiness more than your happiness.

Community that speaks truth when it would be easier to stay silent. These people are rare—but they are a gift from God.

If you want to grow, you need more than cheerleaders—you need coaches. Encouragers, yes, but also truth-tellers. And you need to be that kind of friend too.

So take a look around. Who has permission to challenge you? Who reminds you of grace when you fall short? And are you creating space for those kinds of relationships?

Reflection Question
Do the people closest to you push you closer to Jesus—or just make you feel better where you are?

If your community always comforts but never corrects, you’re not being discipled—you’re being enabled.

Prayer
Father, thank You for the gift of community that reflects You. Help me recognize the people who point me to Jesus, and give me the courage to build relationships that prioritize truth over comfort. Shape me through the people around me—and shape them through me. Amen.
