Build Like He Is Lord

“I will show you what someone is like who comes to me, hears my words, and acts on them: He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock.” - Luke 6:47–48a (CSB)

For the last five days, Jesus has been pressing us toward one unavoidable question:
What are you doing with what your King has said? Not what do you know. Not what did you underline. Not what did you agree with. What are you doing with it?

That is where this series has been heading the entire time.

• Day 1 exposed the gap that can exist between calling Jesus “Lord” and actually living under His authority.
• Day 2 showed us that hearing truth is incomplete when truth never becomes action.
• Day 3 made us dig beneath comfort, approval, fear, and control to ask what is really underneath our decisions.
• Day 4 reminded us that pressure reveals what our lives have been built on.
• Day 5 brought us back to the gospel, because none of us has built perfectly. We need the obedient Son who died and rose for disobedient people.

Now we come to response.

And this is where the devotional has to become personal. Because it would be incredibly easy to finish six days of reading about obedience without actually obeying anything.

Think about the irony of that. We could spend an entire week studying Jesus’ warning about hearing without doing, then close the devotional and do nothing with what He said.

So today is simple. What has Jesus already made clear?

You probably do not need ten things. Find one. One command. One area. One place where you already know what obedience looks like.

Maybe it is forgiveness. Maybe there is a name that comes to your mind immediately. Maybe you have spent months rehearsing what they did, explaining why your anger is understandable, and waiting for them to somehow deserve forgiveness.

Jesus has already spoken.

Maybe it is honesty. There is something you have hidden, distorted, or avoided saying because the truth could cost you.

Jesus has already spoken.

Maybe there is a compromise you have been protecting. You know it is shaping your heart.
You know it is pulling you away from God. You know you need to bring it into the light.

Jesus has already spoken.

Maybe it is reconciliation. Maybe generosity. Maybe a relationship. Maybe repentance. Maybe something God has been pressing on you through His Word for months. Name it.
Complete this sentence: “Jesus has already made this clear: __________.”

Do not make it complicated. Then dig one layer deeper. Why have you not obeyed?

Complete the next sentence: “I have delayed obedience because __________.”

Be honest. Fear? Comfort? Approval? Control? Embarrassment? What you might lose? How the other person might respond? Maybe you have called the delay “praying about it.”

And there are absolutely moments when prayer and careful discernment are necessary.
But sometimes we pray about things Jesus has already made clear because prayer can feel safer than surrender.
 
Sometimes we keep asking God to reveal His will when the issue is whether we are willing to follow the will He has already revealed. That is where Jesus’ image of the builder comes back into focus. The wise man dug deep.

He did the hard work before the storm arrived. He did not wait until floodwater was crashing through the doorway to start thinking about a foundation. He built beforehand.

That means obedience today matters.

• The phone call matters.
• The confession matters.
• The boundary matters.
• The decision to forgive matters.
• The quiet act of faithfulness nobody sees matters.

This is foundation work. And you are not being called to do it alone.

This is where so many Christians get discouraged. We hear a call to obedience and immediately think, “I need more discipline. I need more willpower. I need to become stronger.”

No. You need the Spirit of God.

The gospel does not tell you that Jesus forgave you and now you are on your own to figure out obedience. Christ gives His Spirit to His people. So ask for Spirit given power. Make the prayer specific.

• “Holy Spirit, give me power to forgive this person.”
• “Give me courage to confess this.”
• “Give me strength to end this compromise.”
• “Give me humility to make this right.”
• “Give me faith to obey when I cannot control the outcome.”

Specific dependence. Then act.

Prayer is not a substitute for the next step when God has already made that step clear. Ask for power. Then move. Make the call. Send the message. Have the conversation. Confess the hidden thing. Give what God has been pressing you to give. Walk away from the compromise. Take the step.

You may not feel ready. Readiness is often not the real issue. Submission is. And remember why you can do this without fear. You are building on Christ. The King calling you to obey is the same King who gave His life for you. The One asking you to surrender is the One who surrendered Himself to the Father all the way to the cross. The One calling you to trust Him has already proven His love.

• His authority is good.
• His wisdom is trustworthy.
• His grace is sufficient.
• His Spirit is present.

So hear His Word. Trust His authority. Ask for Spirit given power. Then do what He says. Because authentic devotion eventually becomes visible. Not because Christians obey perfectly. We do not. We stumble. We repent. We return to grace. We keep learning.

But when the King speaks, His people increasingly stop negotiating and start building.
The storm will come. When it does, it will reveal what was underneath your life before the pressure ever arrived. So dig deep today.

• Dig beneath comfort.
• Dig beneath approval.
• Dig beneath control.
• Dig until Christ is underneath everything.

Then build.

• Build your decisions on His Word.
• Build your relationships on His authority.
• Build your integrity on His truth.
• Build your future on His wisdom.

And when you fail, return to grace and keep building.

Today, do not merely call Him Lord. Build your life like He is.

“Hear His Word. Trust His authority. Ask for Spirit given power. Then do what He says.”

Prayer
Father, thank You for speaking clearly through Your Word. I confess that there are places where I have heard You and delayed. Places where I have known what You said and negotiated. Show me the specific place where You are calling me to obey today. Help me stop hiding behind fear, comfort, approval, or control. Thank You that my hope is Jesus. Thank You for the obedient Son who gave Himself for my rebellion, died in my place, and rose again. Holy Spirit, give me power to obey what You have already made clear.

• Where I need courage, give me courage.
• Where I need humility, humble me.
• Where I need to forgive, give me power to forgive.
• Where I need to confess, help me bring it into the light.
• Where I need to act, give me faith to move.

Dig beneath everything in me that competes with the authority of Jesus. Build my life on Christ. And when the storms come, may they reveal a life resting on the King who cannot be shaken. In Jesus’ name, amen.
