Grace in the Wrestling
“And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” – 1 Corinthians 6:11
We all wrestle with something. For some, it's same-sex attraction. For others, it's pride, lust, or the desire to be in control. But hear this clearly: the presence of struggle does not mean the absence of salvation.
Too many believers assume that if they're truly saved, they shouldn't still wrestle. But Scripture never promises the removal of all temptation. It promises a Savior who enters into the battle with us—and gives us grace greater than the fight.
1 Corinthians 6:11 is one of the most hope-filled verses in the New Testament. Paul had just listed all kinds of sins, but then said something stunning: “And that is what some of you were.” Past tense. That’s the power of the gospel. You may still feel the pull of what once enslaved you, but in Christ, your identity is no longer in what tempts you—it’s in who saved you.
We don’t overcome sin by gritting our teeth. We overcome by surrendering daily to Christ’s lordship. His Spirit is the One who transforms our desires, not our willpower. And even when change feels slow, don’t give up. You’re not being asked to be perfect—you’re being invited to be surrendered.
The goal isn’t to never struggle. The goal is to never stop submitting.
Reflection Question
What specific struggle have you been trying to manage in your own strength instead of surrendering to Christ?
The presence of struggle isn’t failure. Refusing to surrender is. But when you lay down control, grace takes over—and grace always wins.
Prayer
Lord, I bring my struggle into the light. I’ve tried to fight alone, and I’m tired. Teach me to stop managing and start surrendering. Wash me again in Your truth. Remind me that I’ve been made new—even when I don’t feel it. Thank You that grace meets me in the wrestling. Amen.
