Faith That Moves Mountains

“…Truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.” – Matthew 17:20

Jesus’ words about mustard-seed faith and mountain-moving power are often misunderstood. Some imagine faith as a magic trick: if I believe hard enough, God has to do what I want. But Jesus wasn’t promising His disciples a blank check for personal desires. He was teaching them about the authority and sufficiency of God when His people trust Him.

Mountains in Scripture often represent obstacles too great for human strength—barriers that cannot be moved by effort or cleverness. The disciples faced one of those barriers when they couldn’t cast out a demon. Jesus rebuked their lack of faith, not because they didn’t believe hard enough, but because they weren’t depending on Him. They tried to handle spiritual warfare in their own ability. Jesus reminded them that the power to move mountains doesn’t rest in their strength, but in God’s.

Faith that moves mountains doesn’t come from positive thinking or sheer willpower. It comes from surrender—acknowledging that God is able, even when I am not. The mustard seed is small, yet when planted, it grows into something far larger than itself. In the same way, faith rooted in Christ produces results far beyond what we could imagine.

Today, what mountain stands before you? A relationship that feels beyond repair? A sin you can’t seem to conquer? A prayer unanswered for years? Jesus calls you to bring even mustard-seed faith to Him and trust that He is able to move what you cannot.

Reflection Question
What “mountain” in your life feels immovable right now, and how might you trust Christ to move it rather than trying to push it yourself?

Faith that moves mountains isn’t about moving what you want. It’s about trusting the God who can move what you can’t.

Prayer
Lord, You see the mountains in my life that feel impossible to move. Forgive me for trying to climb or push them in my own strength. Help me to trust You with mustard-seed faith, believing not in my ability but in Your power. Move in ways that only You can, so that my life points others back to You. Amen.
