Faith Grows in Dependance

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” – Proverbs 3:5-6

Faith is not something we master once and for all. It grows as we learn to depend more fully on Christ. The disciples discovered this when they asked Jesus why they couldn’t cast out the demon. His response pointed them not to bigger faith, but to deeper dependence. Some battles, He said, are only won through prayer.

Prayer is the language of dependence. When we pray, we admit we can’t do it on our own. When we fail to pray, we’re often confessing (without words) that we think we can. Jesus wasn’t giving the disciples a new formula, but a reminder of where their strength comes from. Mountain-moving faith isn’t about flexing spiritual muscle; it’s about kneeling in surrender.

Dependence looks weak in the world’s eyes, but it’s where true strength is found. Every time we turn to God in prayer, every time we lean into His Word, every time we obey when it’s hard, our faith deepens. It’s in the daily, humble, dependent choices that mustard-seed faith grows into unshakable trust.

Today, instead of trying harder, try leaning harder—on Christ.

Reflection Question
Where in your life right now do you most need to stop trying harder and start leaning harder on Christ?

Some things only happen by prayer. And prayer isn’t a backup plan—it’s dependence on the only One who can actually move the mountain.

Prayer
Lord, thank You that my strength is not the source of my faith—You are. Teach me to depend on You daily, not only when life feels overwhelming. Grow my faith through prayer, obedience, and trust, so that even in weakness, I learn that You are strong. Amen.
