Building on the Right Foundation
"Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock." – Matthew 7:24
Every life is under construction. With every decision, relationship, and pursuit, we are adding bricks and beams to the house of our existence. The question Jesus forces us to wrestle with in Matthew 7 is not how impressive the house looks, but what lies beneath it. He tells the story of two builders who both heard His words. The difference wasn’t exposure, but application. One listened and obeyed, laying a foundation on rock. The other listened but ignored, building on shifting sand. Both houses looked fine until the storm came. Then the truth was revealed.
Storms will always come. They come in the form of financial crises, broken relationships, sickness, grief, doubt, or cultural upheaval. When those winds howl and rains beat against our lives, appearances are stripped away, and only the foundation remains. Jesus wasn’t describing two different types of storms—He was describing two different types of faith. One is rooted in mere admiration of Christ’s words, the other in surrender to His authority.
Many people build on sand without realizing it. We might rely on career success, family identity, personal morality, or even religious activity as our foundation. But these cannot hold when the ground shakes. They were never meant to. True stability is found only in Jesus Christ, the solid rock who cannot be moved. To build on Him means more than liking His teachings—it means weaving them into daily obedience. It means not just hearing the Word but doing it.
Today, consider your own foundation. Is your faith rooted in cultural Christianity, personal effort, or religious performance? Or is it anchored to the unshakable person of Jesus? He is not just a supplement to add strength to your house—He is the ground beneath it, the Rock that alone can hold when everything else falls apart.
Reflection Question
Where in your life have you confused the appearance of strength for the substance of a strong foundation in Christ?
It doesn’t matter how polished the outside looks. If the foundation is faulty, collapse is only a storm away.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, expose the foundations of my life for what they really are. Show me where I’ve trusted in sand instead of You. Teach me to not just admire Your words but to obey them, even when it costs me. Thank You that You are the solid rock that holds when everything else crumbles. Amen.
