The Storms Will Come

"Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds." – James 1:2

Storms don’t knock politely before entering our lives. They crash in suddenly—a doctor’s report that changes everything, a friendship that fractures beyond repair, a job loss that leaves you reeling, or spiritual opposition that feels relentless. Jesus never promised His followers a storm-free life. In fact, He warned us plainly: “In this world you will have trouble” (John 16:33). The question is not if storms will come, but when.

The difference between the wise and the foolish builder isn’t that one avoided storms while the other endured them. Both houses were hit with the same floods, the same winds, the same battering forces. The difference was in the foundation. The fool built for sunny skies, thinking storms were unlikely. The wise man looked to the horizon and prepared for what was certain.

Notice that Jesus doesn’t hand us a survival checklist for storms. He offers Himself. He is the Rock beneath us, the bedrock that cannot be shaken no matter how fierce the storm. Building on Christ means anchoring our lives to Him through obedience to His Word, honest dependence on Him in prayer, and real community with His people. These practices don’t keep storms away, but they prepare us to endure them without collapsing.

When storms rage, they reveal what our lives are truly built on. Shifting sand crumbles under pressure, but those who have Christ as their foundation may bend, may even break in some places, but will not be swept away. The storm may scar the walls of your house, but the foundation will hold firm. And when the storm passes, you’ll find that what remains is stronger, deeper, and more secure than before.

Reflection Question
Looking back, how have life’s storms exposed the strength—or weakness—of your spiritual foundation?

The fool builds in the sun and forgets about the storm. The wise man looks at the sky and builds for what’s coming.

Prayer
Lord, I know the storms of life are not optional, but inevitable. Teach me not to fear them, but to prepare by building on You. Thank You that I do not face hardship alone—you are my Rock, my shelter, and my strength. Help me build today with eternity in mind, so when the storms come, I may stand. Amen.
