Built on the Cornerstone

In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit. - Ephesians 2:21-22

Imagine trying to build a house without a foundation or cornerstone. It would be unstable, unsafe, and ultimately collapse. Our spiritual lives are no different. In God's household, Jesus Christ is the cornerstone—the essential element that determines the structure's alignment and stability. Everything in our faith is measured against Him. When we try to build our lives on any other foundation—success, relationships, possessions, or even religious activities—we create something that cannot withstand life's storms.

The apostles and prophets form the rest of the foundation, providing the teachings and examples that help us understand how to live as members of God's family. Their words, preserved in Scripture, give us the blueprint for this new community. As living stones in this spiritual house, we each have a place and purpose. We're not meant to stand alone but to be joined together with other believers. When we're properly aligned with Christ and connected to one another, we create a dwelling place for God's Spirit. This means our individual spiritual health affects the whole structure.

If we're out of alignment with Christ or disconnected from other believers, it weakens the entire building. But when we're firmly established on the cornerstone, even our weaknesses become opportunities for God's strength to be displayed. Today, consider how well-aligned your life is with Christ, the cornerstone. Are there areas where you've drifted from His example or teachings?

Reflection Question
What areas of your life might need realignment with Christ as your cornerstone, and how might this strengthen not just you but the entire body of believers?

"When the strength of the Church is rooted in Jesus, the weaknesses of the individuals within that body are no longer exposed, but they are restored."

Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank you for being the cornerstone of my faith. Forgive me for the times I've tried to build my life on other foundations. Help me stay aligned with you and connected to my spiritual family. Make us together a dwelling place that honors you. Amen.
