The Great Opposition
"For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want." – Galatians 5:17
The Christian life isn’t a playground — it’s a battleground. Inside every believer, two opposing natures wrestle for control: the Spirit and the flesh. This tension isn’t imaginary; it’s spiritual reality. The flesh — our old sinful nature — wants comfort, control, and independence. The Spirit — God’s presence living within us — desires surrender, holiness, and intimacy with Christ. These two cannot coexist peacefully. They are like oil and water — constantly separating, never blending.
When Paul wrote to the Galatians, he wasn’t describing a one-time battle. He was describing a daily war. Every time you choose forgiveness over bitterness, purity over lust, truth over deception, humility over pride — you’re engaging in spiritual warfare. The very presence of this struggle is proof that the Spirit is alive within you. If you feel the pull between right and wrong, holiness and compromise, it means you belong to God. The absence of struggle isn’t a sign of peace; it’s a sign of surrender to sin.
But there’s hope in this conflict. The Spirit isn’t just fighting beside you — He’s fighting within you. God never commands us to win by willpower but to walk by dependence. The more we yield to the Spirit, the less control the flesh holds. Freedom doesn’t come from fighting harder — it comes from surrendering sooner.
Today, don’t be discouraged by the struggle within you. Be encouraged that it means the Holy Spirit hasn’t given up on you. Let that awareness draw you closer to God, not further from Him. The opposition is real — but so is the victory.
Reflection Question
Where do you feel the greatest tension between your flesh and the Spirit? How might you practice surrender in that specific area instead of trying to win through self-effort?
The Spirit and the flesh exist as total opposites. They are more opposite than night and day, because even the sun and the moon share the same sky two times a day.
Prayer
Holy Spirit, I confess the war within me. I often feel the pull between what my flesh wants and what You desire. Thank You that this struggle is not a sign of failure but evidence that You are alive in me. Teach me to surrender more quickly, to trust Your power more deeply, and to walk in step with You today. Amen.
