Reflecting His Light
“You are the light of the world. A city situated on a hill cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and puts it under a basket, but rather on a lampstand, and it gives light for all who are in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.” - Matthew 5:14-16
You ever drive through the backroads of Texas at night? No streetlights, no neon signs—just pitch black. And then, suddenly, a deer’s eyes catch your headlights. You know what’s crazy? That deer’s eyes don’t produce light; they just reflect it. That’s you and me. Jesus calls us the “light of the world,” but here’s the deal—we’re not the source. We’re the moon, not the sun. We reflect the light of Christ.
Now, let’s be honest. Sometimes our mirrors get smudged. You ever notice how a dirty mirror doesn’t reflect light all that well? Sin, distraction, and busyness can cloud the surface. Maybe you’ve been chasing productivity or numbing yourself with entertainment. Maybe your prayer life is more like a 911 call than an ongoing conversation with the living God. That’s distance—and distance dims your reflection.
But the beauty of the gospel is that God doesn’t leave us in the dark. Jesus didn’t come to scold you for having a dusty mirror—He came to cleanse it. So today, be still. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you where you’ve drifted. Is there unconfessed sin that needs to be laid bare? Are you too busy to even notice His light? Draw near again. Stay close to Him.
And here’s the wild part—when you reflect Him, it’s noticeable. The world sees it. And they don’t marvel at you—they marvel at the Source. So today, let your life be a living, breathing testimony that points back to the true Light. Pray for one tangible way you can reflect Jesus—maybe it’s in your patience with your kids, your kindness to a coworker, or your willingness to extend grace where it’s least deserved. Reflect Him well.
