Fueling Your Light

“Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light on my path.” - Psalm 119:105 (CSB)

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. All things were created through him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. That light shines in the darkness, and yet the darkness did not overcome it.” - John 1:1-5 (CSB)

You ever try hiking in the woods at night without a flashlight? It’s terrifying. Every branch crack sounds like a mountain lion. Every root you trip over feels like you’re about to faceplant into a snake pit. But the moment you turn on a light, everything changes. You can see where you’re going. You’re no longer paralyzed by uncertainty. You walk with confidence.

This is what the Word of God does for you—it illuminates the path. “Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light on my path.” Notice it doesn’t say floodlight. It’s a lamp. Sometimes God doesn’t show you the whole path—He just gives you enough light for the next step. You want the five-year plan; He gives you a flashlight’s glow, just enough to take the next step of obedience.

Now, here’s the reality: You can’t shine brightly for Christ if you’re disconnected from the source of light. You can’t expect to walk in wisdom, discernment, and holiness if your Bible is collecting dust. And listen—I know what it’s like. You miss one day of reading, and it turns into a week. The next thing you know, you feel spiritually dull. You convince yourself you’re too busy, or that you’ll “get back on track tomorrow.” And then weeks pass.

But hear me on this—the enemy would love for you to stay in that place of disconnection. He wants you spiritually malnourished, weakened, and dim. Because the weaker you are, the less light you’ll reflect. That’s why being in the Word isn’t just a nice addition to your spiritual life—it is your spiritual life. You need it.

And here’s why: when you’re consistently in the Word, you’re not just reading stories or gathering information—you’re encountering Jesus Himself. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” The Word is not just information—it’s a person. It’s Christ. The Scriptures aren’t just about God—they reveal God. They stir your affections for Him. They transform you.

So, let me ask you: are you fueling your light? Or are you trying to shine on empty? You wouldn’t expect your phone to last all day without charging, but some of us expect our souls to run on a five-minute verse of the day. That’s not how it works. You need to linger with Him. You need to meditate on truth, let it convict you, shape you, and renew you.

Practical Steps:
  • Consistency over intensity: If you’ve drifted from the Word, start small. Don’t try to read five chapters a day overnight. Start with 10-15 minutes of slow, deliberate reading. Meditate. Linger.
  • Quality over quantity: One verse deeply meditated on can do more to fuel your light than five chapters skimmed.
  • Stay tethered: Find a rhythm. Whether it’s morning, lunch break, or before bed—establish a regular time to be in the Word.

Prayer and Reflection:
  • Ask God to renew your hunger for His Word.
  • Pray for consistency in your time with Him, even when life is busy.
  • Thank Him for the gift of His Word that reveals Christ, the Light of the world.

At the end of the day, you and I have no light of our own—we’re just reflectors. But when we stay connected to Christ, the true Light, we shine with a brilliance that pierces the darkness. And here’s the hope we cling to: the darkness cannot overcome it. Not in your workplace. Not in your family. Not in your neighborhood. No matter how heavy the darkness feels, His light is always stronger.

So, fuel your light. Stay close to the source. Let His Word illuminate your path. And as you shine, remember—you’re not shining for your own glory. You’re shining to make much of Him, the Light that no darkness can extinguish.
