Trusting in the Unknown

"The Lord is my shepherd; I have what I need. He lets me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside quiet waters. He renews my life; he leads me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even when I go through the darkest valley, I fear no danger, for you are with me; your rod and your staff—they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Only goodness and faithful love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord as long as I live." - Psalm 23

We want clarity. We want control. We want the full picture before we commit to the journey. But that’s not how God usually works. He gives us one step, one light, one moment of clarity at a time—not because He wants to frustrate us, but because He wants us to follow Him in faith.

Psalm 23 offers a picture of what this looks like. The Lord isn’t a distant mapmaker—He’s a present Shepherd. He walks beside us, leads us, and protects us through every hill and valley. And even in the darkest valleys, He doesn’t leave us. His rod and staff—His correction and protection—are right there with us.

Trusting God in the unknown requires letting go of the illusion that we’re in control. It means embracing the discomfort of uncertainty, knowing that God is never uncertain. It means stepping forward, not because we know where the path leads, but because we know Who is leading us.

Reflection Questions:
  • Where in your life do you feel stuck or unsure of what’s next?
  • How might your perspective shift if you saw uncertainty as an invitation to walk closer with God?
  • What’s one practical step of faith you can take today, even if the full path is still unclear?

Faith isn’t having the whole map—it’s trusting the One who does.

Prayer:
Shepherd of my soul, help me to rest in Your leadership. When I want to see the whole plan, help me to see You instead. You’re all I need. Teach me to walk in trust, even in the valleys. Let Your presence be enough for me. Amen.
