Walking in the Light

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. All things were created through him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. That light shines in the darkness, and yet the darkness did not overcome it. There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify about the light, so that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but he came to testify about the light. The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.
He was in the world, and the world was created through him, and yet the world did not recognize him. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, he gave them the right to be children of God, to those who believe in his name, who were born, not of natural descent, or of the will of the flesh, or of the will of man, but of God. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. We observed his glory, the glory as the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth."
- John 1:1-14

John opens his Gospel with staggering words: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Then he adds something more intimate: “The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us.” This is Jesus — not just a messenger of truth, but the embodiment of truth itself.

Think about this: every time we open Scripture, we’re encountering not just information — we’re meeting with the living Christ. He is the Light that gives light to everyone. His Word does not reveal every twist and turn of the future, but it faithfully shows the next step we need to take. That’s by design. God doesn’t want us to walk by sight — He wants us to walk by faith, step by step, hand in hand with Him.

We often resist this because we want control. We want a map, not a lamp. But God isn’t offering us a five-year plan — He’s offering us Himself. His Word doesn’t just inform our minds — it transforms our hearts and directs our lives, one step at a time.

Reflection Questions:
  • Are you asking God to reveal the entire plan, or are you willing to trust Him with the next step?
  • When was the last time reading Scripture felt like meeting Jesus?

"God’s Word is not a floodlight that shows you your entire future. It’s a lamp that reveals your next step — and invites you to walk closely with the One holding it."

Prayer:
Jesus, You are the Light of the world and the Word made flesh. Teach me to walk in Your light — not rushing ahead, not stumbling in fear, but following You step by step. I want more than knowledge — I want communion. As I read Your Word, let me sense Your nearness. Speak clearly. Lead tenderly. And help me to trust Your presence even when the path feels uncertain. Amen.
