Bringing Fear into the Light
Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. - Galatians 6:2
One of the most powerful strategies fear uses against us is isolation. It convinces us to hide our struggles, to pretend we're fine when we're falling apart inside. We become experts at smiling through our panic, believing the lie that naming our fears will give them more power. But God's way is different. Throughout Scripture, we see a pattern: what remains in darkness holds power over us, but what's brought into the light loses its grip. This is true of sin, and it's also true of fear and anxiety. Naming our fears—to God and to trusted others—is not an admission of failure but an act of courage. When we specifically identify what we're afraid of, we can begin to apply God's specific promises to those fears. Vague anxiety becomes concrete concerns that can be addressed with concrete truth. God already knows your fears intimately. Psalm 139:4 reminds us that before a word is on our tongue, God knows it completely. You're not telling Him anything He doesn't already know. But in speaking your fears aloud, you're acknowledging your need for Him and creating space for His truth to replace your anxious thoughts. Today, resist the urge to hide your fears. Bring them into the light of God's presence and the support of community.
Reflection Question
What specific fear have you been reluctant to name or share with others? Who is one trusted person you could share this fear with this week?
You're never going to conquer what you refuse to confess. You can never have victory over sin in your life that you never bring to the Lord. God does not heal what we pretend doesn't exist.
Prayer
God, give me courage to bring my fears out of hiding and into your light. Thank you that you already know my anxieties and aren't shocked or disappointed by them. Help me to find safe people who can support me and remind me of your truth when fear feels overwhelming. I trust that what I bring into the light loses its power over me. Amen.
