Love That Points Back to the Cross
"This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters." – 1 John 3:16
Every love story, no matter how beautiful, finds its truest meaning in one place — the cross. The cross redefines love, showing us that it’s not rooted in comfort, chemistry, or convenience, but in covenant sacrifice. Love doesn’t start in romance; it starts in redemption.
When Jesus stretched out His arms on that cross, He wasn’t responding to our worthiness — He was revealing His character. His love didn’t wait for us to get it right; it stepped into our mess and paid the price to make us whole. That’s the love every marriage, friendship, and relationship is meant to reflect — a love that gives, serves, forgives, and endures.
When Christ becomes the center of your relationships, the cross becomes the model for how you love. You stop asking, “What do I get from this?” and start asking, “What can I give?” You stop running when things get hard and start leaning into grace. You stop measuring love by emotion and start measuring it by endurance.
The beauty of the gospel is that the same love that saved you also empowers you to love others. You don’t love from your own strength — you love from His. You love because He first loved you. Every act of grace you show, every forgiveness you extend, every sacrifice you make, becomes a small echo of Calvary — a love that points people back to Jesus.
Reflection Question
How would your relationships change if the cross — not culture, not emotion, not comfort — became your standard for love?
Love doesn’t start in romance; it starts in redemption. Every act of true love is an echo of the cross.
Prayer
Jesus, thank You for showing me what real love looks like. Teach me to love like You — sacrificially, faithfully, and unconditionally. Let every relationship I have point others back to You, the source of perfect love. Amen.
